The nutritional supplement industry is a multi-billion dollar industry in the US. If a patient asked you about taking supplements, what would you tell them. Explain to them the best ways to access nutrients and why. What would be the best ways to determine whether they need a supplement and how could your patient ensure that they are getting the nutrient in the supplement they choose? (you may need to do a little research on this one but at least some of this should be obvious especially if you watched the third lecture video on vitamins and minerals).
Your Answer:
I will educate the patient that having balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins. Explain the patient that foods contain many nutrients that work together to improve health in many ways, but it is not replicated in supplements. For example, vitamins and minerals essential for vision and energy metabolism. Vitamins like A, which is vital for vision, and various B vitamins, which aid in energy release from food, play crucial roles in our health. Micronutrients work as cofactors or coenzymes, aiding enzymes in speeding up chemical reactions necessary for life.
I will explain to the patient that "the importance of a balanced diet rich in various nutrients to prevent deficiencies and maintain overall health, patient should not take vitamin right away without testing the vitamin level in the blood, the patient should assess their diet with a healthcare provider, or a nutritionist can help identify any nutritional gaps."

NOT OPTIONAL: One additional thing you learned about vitamins and minerals (this is a very huge topic so feel free to focus on one if you want). If you want to also include a question here, I would be delighted to answer.
Your Answer:
In this module I have learned that vitamin D is unique because it acts as both a nutrient and a hormone. Getting enough sunlight is key for Vitamin D production, which can be a challenge in areas with little sunlight or for people who are mostly indoors. Lack of sunlight can affect our health and mood.
It is made by our skin when exposed to sunlight, then turned into its active form, calcitriol, by our liver and kidneys which form helps manage calcium and phosphorus in our blood, supports bone health, and affects our immune system.
